How can my group get a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) to open a bank account?

Specify the group is a non-profit
organization whose principal business is
self-help. Step 3 - Call the IRSTo obtain your Federal Employer Identification number, simply call the Cincinnati IRS office at 1-800-829-4933 (toll free) and ask for the EIN Operation. You can apply for the EIN over the phone and in many cases they will issue the number for you and give it to you over the phone. You may need to explain your reason for wanting it right away. Tell them that you have the completed SS-4 form in front of you and that it is necessary for you have the EIN to open a bank account. That is usually all it takes. They will only give you the number if you are a trusted servant of your group. Step 4 - Go to the bank with the FEIN number.Use the FEIN number
as the Tax ID for your group or area checking account. Many
banks will change the number on an existing account to the new
FEIN. Some banks will ask you to close your existing account
and open a new one. |
